William Reed Commemorations

On 1st June Buckland Brewer will be commemorating the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the Bible Christian blend of Methodism in the parish. This was when William Reed and Samuel Thorne were arrested for preaching on the Village Green during the Village Revels; this incident will be re-enacted as part of the commemorations. The History Group have agreed to bring colour to the ‘Revel’, which will take place on the village green between 2.30pm and 4.00pm. Do come and participate (we are looking for volunteers in vaguely realistic nineteenth century costume) watch, or eat cream tea and look at the flower festival.

To set the scene, I will be giving a talk this Sunday, May 5th at 4.00pm in the Methodist Church on Uproar and Disorder: the impact of the Bible Christians on North Devon. There will be refreshments available.

Don’t forget our regular meeting this month is on 15 May and will be a talk by Hugh Reed on The Wool Trade in North Devon. This is an excellent talk and very informative. Please to try to attend and bring friends. 7.30pm in the church schoolroom as usual.
