First World War Roll of Honour

Roll of HonourThe Buckland Brewer war memorial lists ten men from the parish who lost their lives in the First World War. The names of a further sixty two men who served appear on the Roll of Honour in the church. In addition, we have identified another eighteen men whose names we feel should have been included; nine of whom also perished during the war. We also have a record of one lady who served as a VAD nurse. One of our members had already done a great deal of work on these men, over a long period; we decided to widen the scope of this research. Following our work with the school children, on the Buckland men who lost their lives in the First World War, we turned our attention to those who served and survived. We invited members of the community and others with an interest in these men, to ‘claim’ one or more of the names and with our help, to see what could be found out about them.

Each name links to further information about that serviceman. We have more detail about some than others. No attempt has been made to standardise the data; the different formats reflect the many contributors to this project. If you feel that you can add to our knowledge of any of these men, please get in touch as we are keen to update the data as new information comes to light. The information is accurate to the best of our knowledge but we cannot be responsible for any errors that these biographies contain. Do please tell us if you feel that we have made mistakes. We would also be interested to hear if you feel that there are other Buckland service personnel who should be added to our list.
