Our History group meeting this month is next Wednesday 18th October when Brian Nash will be talking about Torrington Past and Torrington Present. We shall be meeting at the Church Schoolroom at 7.30pm as usual. All are welcome. Members £2, non-members £3 and under 18s are free.
We have two events in November. Our regular meeting, including a brief AGM, is on Wednesday 15th November at 7.30pm but on this occasion we will be in the New Village Hall at Hillpark. Master Christopher will be in his guise as a seventeenth century barber surgeon, offering to cure all ills. Although this is not for the fainthearted, it is particularly suitable for bringing a friend, including older children and young people. We hope to attract a bumper audience.
Also in November is the event run by the Village Hall committee that we are assisting with. On Friday 17th November, member Liz Shakespeare will be talking about her latest book, The Postman Poet. This is the story of the life of Edward Capern, who delivered the post to Buckland Brewer and wrote many of his poems in the village whilst waiting for the return delivery. Liz will be accompanied by the talented folk musicians Nick Wyke and Becki Driscoll, who have set some of Capern’s poems to music. There will also be Buckland style food. Tickets will be available soon.
