Twenty people and a dog assembled on Bideford Quay on Wednesday for a tour round Bideford, led by Chris Braund. There were two distinct strands to this tour. A number of those present remembered Bideford in the 1960s and could reminisce about what shops were where and running to catch the bus back to Buckland after a trip to the cinema. Others were entertained by details of Bideford’s past glories as a major trading port. We saw the merchant’s homes, including one owned by the Davie family of Orleigh Court fame. We passed the site where John Wesley preached and learned of the town’s connection to the wife of Samuel Peyps. We even met the resident mermaid!
