World War 1 Workshop

Exif_JPEG_PICTUREA dozen members have spent the day researching some of the world war one servicemen from Buckland Brewer. Four more servicemen were claimed for investigating and volunteers made good progress with finding out about their chosen men. Following a general introduction from Janet, Dave presented a case study of his grandfather Charles Vanstone, illustrating the wealth of material that might be found. We discovered those who were invalided out due to ill health, those who were confined to barracks for disobeying orders and those who should appear on the war memorial but do not.

Thanks go to Dave for generously sharing his documents and to Brenda and Lyn for the warming soup. The latter was much needed as, on the coldest day of the winter so far, the schoolroom heaters weren’t quite man enough. All agreed that we had enjoyed the day but that the next one would be when the weather was warmer!

Many thanks must go to Janet, Brenda, Lin, Gill and Chris with their help in finding information about the Brock family. It was a very interesting afternoon.
