The Bureau of Extraordinance Survey, Gazettes

Buckland Brewer History Group have met with The Burn the Curtain Theatre to talk about the history of our parish. The group have spent a week in the Village preparing
for a performance on Friday 29th November 6.45 for 7.00 in the Village Hall.
This is being run in connection with Beaford Arts, with input from the North
Devon Nature Improvement Area. The group claim they are ‘calibrating our cobbles,
measuring our mice, rotating our rhubarb and weigh hey’. Tickets are available from Beaford Arts.

The London Gazette and its Scottish and Irish equivalents can now be searched online on a single website. Just the 270 Buckland Brewer references to sort. For now though, in 1776 a list of those in Exeter Prison includes John Stapledown, formerly of Frithelstock, lately of Buckland Brewer, husbandman.

This week we will be sharing our experiences of the ‘Buried in Buckland’ project with another group hoping to do something similar.
